Bill Murray wurde am 21. September 1950 in Wilmette, Illinois geboren.

Er wuchs mit acht Geschwistern in ärmlichen Vehältnissen auf. Neben seinem Job als Golfcaddy dealte Murray in seiner Jugend mit Drogen und geriet mit dem Gesetz in Konflikt. Bill Murray begann Medizin zu studieren, beendete es aber vorzeitig, um sich ganz der Schauspielerei zu widmen. Bei Saturday Night Life hatte er 1977 erste TV-Auftritte, im Jahr darauf war Murray in The Rutles erstmals auf der Leinwand zu sehen. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Bill Murray in erster Linie durch Komödien wie Ich glaub mich knutscht ein Elch, Ghostbusters oder Die Geister die ich rief.

Im deutschsprachigen Raum wird Bill Murray meist von Arne Elsholtz synchronisiert.
